Carraun - 2019
Composed for JSoM’s “New Art New Music,” circa 2020. Betsy Stiratt’s photograph, Carraun, documents the mysteriousness, mysticality, and beauty of western Ireland’s landscape. For me, Stiratt’s piece is imbued with the idea of present and past coexisting in a single moment – the fine details of the ancient weathered rock against the more distant and infinite northern Atlantic. I want to replicate this sentiment with music very much in the present – active and healthy – and, yet, still haunted or consumed by its past. And I think that as we emerge from the process of understanding such an involved still, Carraun also serves as a reminder for us to return to the present moment and move on…
